Efram
P. Fleming on the "Mass Media City-State"
The award-winning foreign correspondent
will be in the school library Tuesday, Dec. 6, pontificating about corporations
or something. A special fellowship will be presented for the student in
attendance who most creatively works in a reference to having read Fleming's
recent Atlantic Monthly piece on Himalayan Internet providers.
Students
explore multimedia
Students at the Graduate School of Journalism recently learned how to put up
something called a "web page."
As we understand it, this futuristic, professional feat will put them
in demand as "Content Providers."
Documentary screening
 |
The
Graduate School of Journalism offers a screening of
"The Pig." It's a powerful autobiographical film by Chubby
Lancaster, Class of 1998. Faced with an overwhelming addiction to
Jamaican beef patties that threatened to shatter his dream of becoming
a "Frontline" producer, Lancaster spent his second and third
years at school making this harrowing testimony to his experience.
It's proof you don't have to go very far to come up with a great story! |
Lavish
reception will celebrate photos of starving black people
This week's gala event in the school photo gallery will feature wine,
cheese, fusion food, a light-jazz trio, and snapshots of malnourished Africans.
Student overcomes numbing stupefaction
to make valuable career contact
First-year student
Curtis Farlow somehow emerged from unrelenting, punishing boredom brought
on by two consecutive hours of visiting journalist Marie
C. Smaugley talking about herself, forcing himself to bond with the
neurotic, unlikeable magazine writer during her twice-weekly "On
Crafting the Longer Magazine Feature" class. Thursday's topic was
how hurt Smaugley was this one time when Wired didn't put her name
on the cover, even though the editors called her piece "powerful"
and if she were William Gibson her name would have been on the cover.
Then Farlow gently said, "Wow, that's really gotta be disappointing,"
to the disbelief of his classmates. "To tell you the truth, I don't
know how I did it," he later said. He hopes it will lead to a pretty
good internship.
Tawnie
Benchimol, Class of 2000, on rewards of scholarly contemplation
"Getting
a Master's in Journalism isn't just for people who want to write boring
newspaper stories about 'important issues' or whatever. If you're interested
in, like, multimedia it's totally a good place to explore that, and maybe
take some photos too and go to Tibet and I heard this D.J. friend of mine
is putting on a party tonight, we should totally go. J-school is so awesome
you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Getting Published
Stories by students and grads of the school are being published in media outlets around the world.
Amazing paperboy
